Program details

Overview

The micro-credential spans nine modules: presentations delivered effectively, reports on technical subjects, proposals and memos, communication with both teams and clients, readability techniques, time-efficient reviewing practices, and the editing and writing of technical material. Participants work to build and upgrade these communication competencies using real industry examples, practise the skills covered, and receive professional editorial feedback on their own writing.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: UBC Continuing and Professional Education's own page for the Critical Skills for Communication in the Technical Sector micro-credential states it is intended for professionals with a university degree or college diploma in a science or engineering discipline, or for individuals seeking professional development, for example toward a professional association or society requirement. The page sets no minimum GPA, no English-language test score (IELTS, TOEFL or similar), and no portfolio, interview or work-experience requirement beyond holding the stated academic background or professional-development purpose; admission is by direct registration rather than a competitive application process.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
