Program details

Overview

The micro-credential is aimed at those with existing construction experience moving toward the mass timber industry, exploring the core tools and features that go into mass timber construction. Mass timber is described as a building-material category built on timber, a renewable and sustainable resource, used as the main raw input for structural pieces, made off-site under controlled conditions.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This is a Flexible Learning micro-credential rather than a formally admitted program: BCIT states no separate application is required and no English or French language test score is set, beyond a recommendation of English 11. Applicants are also recommended to have basic computer proficiency, including MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, online discussion and internet navigation, and a minimum of one year of experience in a construction-related field such as carpentry, ironworking, construction management, building inspection, design, development, manufacturing, or estimating. The page states that applicants whose background differs from this may contact the administrative assistant to discuss special approval to register. No portfolio, interview, minimum-GPA, or immunisation condition is stated. The program is open to international applicants studying from outside Canada or with valid Canadian status other than a study permit; those on a study permit are not eligible for this program.

Application Details

Start Date: Winter, spring and fall
Application Deadline: BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
