This program covers injury prevention, assessment, rehabilitation, biomechanics, and strength and conditioning in both field and clinical settings, leading to a four-year Bachelor of Science through what the University calls its Enhanced Major in Athletic Therapy. It is not a direct-entry program: students first complete two years, or 60 credit hours, of prescribed coursework, then apply to the enhanced major through a competitive selection process, with an April 1 application deadline and a minimum 3.0 GPA together with a B grade in specific required courses. The program is accredited by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association, and graduates become eligible to challenge the association's National Certification Exam. It suits students aiming to work with musculoskeletal injuries in athletic and clinical environments, and is built to develop critical thinking, observation, and research skills that apply both within athletic therapy practice and in related fields, alongside the clinical and field-based training needed for certification as an athletic therapist.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This is not a direct-entry program. Applicants must first meet The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements (Applied Mathematics 40S or Pre-Calculus 40S is strongly recommended), then, after acceptance to UWinnipeg, complete 60 credit hours (about two years) of prescribed courses with a B grade in specific required courses and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 before they can apply to enter the Athletic Therapy program itself. The programme's own page sets no separate English-language score; applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's institution-wide requirement instead: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 (86 overall/20 per component for tests before January 21, 2026), Duolingo English Test 120, or PTE Academic 58, valid for two years. The program is accredited by the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association, and graduates are eligible to challenge its National Certification Exam.
Application Details
Start Date:September, January and May
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
