Program details
Overview
Bioanthropology at the University of Winnipeg is a Bachelor of Science offered in three-year, four-year, and Honours formats, with the Honours route including a thesis option supported in some cases by student travel for honours research. The program combines coursework from Anthropology, Anatomy, Archaeology, Biochemistry, Biology, Kinesiology, and Geography, and includes laboratory-based study as well as an international field-school component. Admission requires Chemistry 40S together with Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S or Applied Mathematics 40S. Delivery is on the Winnipeg campus, with the program coordinated by Dr. Yadira Chinique de Armas. The program suits students interested in comparative anatomy, cellular biology, archaeological methods, and human evolution who want a combined biological and anthropological approach rather than a single-discipline biology or anthropology degree. Career paths cited on the program page include positions in government and hospital laboratories, forensic laboratories, and museums and zoos, alongside pathways into professional programs in dentistry and medicine and into graduate programs in Anthropology or Biology. The field-school and laboratory components make it suited to students who want hands-on research experience, including fieldwork, as part of an undergraduate degree oriented toward the biological study of humans and their evolutionary history.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: In addition to The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements, applicants must have Chemistry 40S and either Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S or Applied Mathematics 40S. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who are not from an English-exempt country, must meet the university's English proficiency requirement, set out on The University of Winnipeg's own admission requirements page: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall; TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 (86 overall with no component below 20 for tests taken before that date); Duolingo English Test 120; Pearson PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60 (CAEL online 70); LanguageCert Academic 67; or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 180, with results no more than two years old. International applicants apply online through the university's application portal and pay a non-refundable CAD $120 application fee, with official transcripts sent directly from the issuing institution to the Admissions Office; recommended international deadlines are June 15 for Fall (September), October 15 for Winter (January), and February 15 for Spring (May), and applying three to four months ahead is encouraged to allow time for study-permit processing.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
