Overview
The Special Needs Educator Post-Diploma is for graduates of an Early Childhood Education program who want to continue their studies so they can work with children with special needs. Areas of learning within the Special Needs Educator Post-diploma certificate include: child development, supporting children’s social skills, programming for individual children, critical reflection, working with a team of educators and other professionals to facilitate inclusion, the ECE’s professional role, and skills to support families.

Admission Requirements: This is a post-diploma credential, so entry is built on a completed early childhood qualification rather than on secondary-school courses. Applicants must be graduates of the Early Childhood Education Diploma. If you did not obtain your Early Childhood Education certificate or diploma at TRU, you may be required to take a first-year university-level three-credit English course where your official transcripts do not show it or an equivalent has been completed, together with ECED 2440 or equivalent and ECED 2490 or equivalent. TRU lists the program as open to international applicants and publishes one set of requirements for both applicant types.

International applicants follow the same intake structure with deadlines of 1 May (September), 1 October (January) and 1 February (May); TRU still reviews later applications where space remains, though high-volume programs can close early, so admission runs on a rolling basis around these published cut-offs for the 2027 entry cycle.
