Overview
The Adventure Guide Diploma is a fast-paced study comprised of field trips, outdoor skills instruction, and self-directed expeditions. Courses cover a wide range of adventure activities and theoretical topics. Field trips make up 60 percent of the course load. The field portion of your classes access BC’s exceptional recreational resources for whitewater and ocean pursuits, climbing and skiing. The diploma transfers into Adventure Studies concentrations in the Bachelor of Tourism Management degree (BTM) or the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree for students who wish to complete a degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry is competitive and applications are screened to confirm an adequate level of outdoor recreation experience before entry, and applicants normally come in on technical skill and experience in at least one adventure sport. REQUIREMENTS: you must be 19 years of age at the start of the program and have completed the Adventure Guide Certificate. You then apply to the second year in writing, enclosing a personal resume and a cover letter explaining why you want to move into the diploma and how it will help you meet your goals; briefly outlining the skills and experiences you gained in the Adventure Guide Certificate and how they affected your learning, leadership, professionalism, peers, instructors and the program; and setting out your summer work practicum plans and how they fit your educational and career goals. You also submit a completed Outdoor Experience Log covering all outdoor experience outside course time during the past year. The department reviews your transcripts and GPA for the last year. Finally you must attend a departmental orientation session, either in person or by phone, hand in the completed Adventure Guide Diploma application form, and sit an admissions interview. TRU lists the program as open to international applicants.
