PhD in Building Science

Building Science is a Doctor of Philosophy offered by Toronto Metropolitan University's Department of Architectural Science, applying science principles to the design, performance and environmental interaction of buildings. Students examine sustainable building design, building envelope and enclosure performance, energy modelling, retrofit design and forensic investigation, drawing on laboratories including the Building Science Lab, a full-scale building enclosure lab and a mass timber test facility. The programme typically takes four years to complete on a funded, full-time basis. Admission requires a master's degree in building science, civil engineering, mechanical engineering or a related applied science field. Doctoral candidates work in small cohorts with a faculty supervisor on original research, submitting a written statement of research interests as part of the application. Graduates are prepared for research and academic careers as well as professional practice in building science.
