Architecture is a Doctor of Philosophy offered by Toronto Metropolitan University's Department of Architectural Science, described as the only architecture doctoral programme in Canada focused on research through design. Intended for graduates of an accredited Master of Architecture degree, the programme places design practice at the centre of scholarly inquiry, combining studio work, seminars and faculty mentorship. Students participate in at least two seminars and work closely with a faculty supervisor, with research evaluated at key milestones through the degree. Applicants connect with a supervisor before applying and submit a curriculum vitae and a brief description of proposed research alongside their application through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre. The programme draws on the city of Toronto as a research context for design projects addressing societal and environmental challenges in the built environment. Graduates are prepared for design research and academic careers as well as advanced professional practice in architecture.
