Overview
This program leads to a Ph.D. in applied science, delivered on campus at the Moncton campus through the Faculte d'ingenierie, and trains independent researchers able to design, carry out, and complete applied research projects in priority technology areas. The 101-credit curriculum begins with a predoctoral exam evaluating breadth of knowledge in the chosen specialization, followed by a research seminar covering reliable sourcing, bibliographic research, and synthesis-writing, and a course on research aspects covering research ethics, funding, commercialization, intellectual property, technical writing, and project management. Two directed-studies courses let students build advanced knowledge in a chosen specialization area, and the remaining credits are devoted to the doctoral thesis. Admission requires a North American-style master's degree in applied science engineering completed with a thesis, or an equivalent qualification such as a thesis-based master's in science in an applied field, judged by the Graduate Studies Committee. Candidates must be sponsored by a professor authorized to direct doctoral students in applied sciences. Minimum full-time duration is three years.
