Doctorate in Literary Studies

This program leads to a Ph.D. in literary studies, delivered on campus at the Moncton campus through the Faculte des arts et des sciences sociales, and trains students to produce an original doctoral thesis that contributes to knowledge in literary studies while developing autonomous research skills. The 108-credit curriculum comprises a 6-credit predoctoral oral exam covering both a research paper and a thesis proposal, at least three departmental seminars (one of which may be directed readings), and a 90-credit doctoral thesis that may be written in traditional form or as a series of scholarly articles. Students may take up to two seminars at universities with comparable programs. Admission requires satisfying the university's general third-cycle conditions; holders of a degree judged equivalent have their file reviewed by the department's Graduate Studies Committee, which sets any required preparatory coursework, and master's graduates from other disciplines complete a propaedeutic program. Besides French, candidates must have reading competence in English or another language relevant to their research. Minimum full-time duration is six sessions, with the thesis due within seven years of first enrollment.
