The Doctorat en litterature is a 90-credit research doctorate in the Faculte des arts et des sciences at Universite de Montreal, allowing students to conduct independent research within one of six specializations: German studies, Hispanic studies, comparative and general literature, theory and epistemology of literature, literary and intermedia studies, or digital humanities. Students design a dissertation project under the direction of a faculty supervisor, working across theoretical and comparative approaches to literary and cultural texts. The program is offered full-time or part-time. Admission requires a master's degree or equivalent, and candidates are only eligible once a faculty member has agreed to direct their research project. Application documents may be submitted in French or English depending on the specialization chosen. The dissertation is examined by a committee that includes at least one external member from outside the university.
