This Master's degree (Maitrise) in Urban Planning trains students for professional practice in urban development and territorial planning, with a focus on urban organization, ecological transition, the circular economy, and sustainable development. The 45-credit program offers two concentrations, international urbanism and post-carbon city planning, and can be completed through a pathway with a thesis or directed work, or a pathway with directed work alone. Teaching uses a project- and workshop-based pedagogy, with day classes on the Montreal campus, optional internships, and international activities and research missions. Students without a prior background in urban planning must complete between 3 and 15 credits of introductory urbanism courses. The program is recognized by the Ordre des urbanistes du Quebec and the Canadian Institute of Planners, and concludes with an exhibition of final projects attended by professionals and employers.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: An undergraduate degree is required; applicants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including planning, the social sciences, the natural sciences, and engineering, are welcomed. Applicants without a background in urban planning must complete introductory urbanism courses as part of the program. International and other non-French-educated applicants must generally demonstrate French proficiency of B2 in listening and reading comprehension and B1 (upper range) in written expression. Required documents include a letter of intent of up to 1,000 words, two academic letters of recommendation, and a curriculum vitae. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as files are also assessed qualitatively.
