This PhD programme is a Canadian doctorate applying optics and photonics to biological and biomedical research, spanning applications from diagnosis to treatment. Students design an original research project drawing on physics, engineering, chemistry, and the life sciences, working with a confirmed thesis supervisor. The credential awarded is a Philosophiæ doctor (Ph.D.), designated by the programme code BPH. The programme comprises 90 credits, with up to 4 credits available through recognition of prior learning, and an estimated full-time duration of four years. The programme must be pursued full-time and is structured around coursework, a comprehensive examination, and a doctoral thesis. Instruction requires proficiency in written and spoken French, plus English reading comprehension. New students are admitted in the fall, winter, and summer terms.
