Overview
Cégep Garneau is a public French-language college of general and professional education (CEGEP) in Quebec City, Quebec, established in August 1969 through the merger of the Collège des Jésuites, École Normale Mérici and École Normale Laval.
It opened with about 550 students in the former Collège des Jésuites building before moving into the École Normale Laval site, a location that became permanent by the late 1970s as enrollment grew to nearly 3,000. The college later acquired four buildings on Boulevard de l'Entente and added a sports centre, an administrative pavilion and, more recently, a dedicated nursing-education pavilion; its athletic teams now play out of an on-campus stadium.
The institution is named for François-Xavier Garneau, the Quebec City-born notary, translator and poet remembered as the first major historian of French Canada. In 2012 the college formally adopted the term "cégep" in place of "collège" to affirm its identity, keeping "Garneau" as the everyday name long used by students and staff.
Today Cégep Garneau offers pre-university diploma programs in natural science, social science, arts/letters/communication and the International Baccalaureate, alongside technical diploma programs spanning health, justice, business, computing and design, plus continuing-education and Tremplin DEC pathways for students exploring their options before choosing a program.
