Overview
The Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a five-year combined program offered by the University of Alberta, designed for students who wish to teach instrumental music in junior or senior high school. It combines music coursework, including individual instrumental lessons, music theory, and music history, with the education courses required for teacher certification, along with a choral component. For direct entry from Alberta high school, admission is based on English Language Arts 30-1, one further course from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences, and three further courses from Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences, together with a performance audition and a music theory placement exam. On completion of the program, students are granted two separate degrees: a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education. Possible careers for graduates include secondary school teacher, music teacher, English as a second language teacher, and curriculum developer for music education.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: For direct entry from Alberta high school, admission is based on English Language Arts 30-1; one further course from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences; and three further courses from Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences. All applicants must also complete a performance audition and a theory placement exam; students who do not pass the theory placement examination may be required to complete MUSIC 100 (extra to degree) before enrolling in MUSIC 155. Applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must also meet the university's English Language Proficiency requirement.
