Program details

Overview

This undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor's degree in music from Université de Montréal, offered full-time or part-time through day and evening courses on the Montreal campus. The curriculum builds broad musical knowledge across several disciplines, with required courses in music history from antiquity to the contemporary period, musical analysis of forms and harmony, ear training, and music methodology, alongside foundational courses in writing and analysis of the tonal language. Mandatory core courses are combined with elective options that let students shape their own pathway, and the program describes two orientations relating to keyboard knowledge and individual musical practice. International study opportunities and a research, community, or international (RECI) pathway are available. The program is aimed at students interested in a range of musical genres who are not yet committed to a specific specialization, providing a broad curriculum intended to keep open later paths into performance, composition, musicology, or writing about music rather than requiring early specialization. Admission requires an audition and a music theory test, and enrollment is limited.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Beyond the general Quebec-DEC admission pathways, this programme's selection rests on the quality of the submitted application file rather than a published cote R. Applicants whose prior schooling was entirely in French are generally considered to meet the language requirement; others must submit results, dated within 24 months of the programme start, from an accepted French test showing at least B2 in oral and written comprehension, or evidence of the Epreuve uniforme de francais or 60 or more university credits taught in French. Candidates must also pass an instrumental audition - classical (two pieces of the candidate's choice, with or without score) or jazz (a standard plus a blues-structure improvisation) - sit a placement test in theory, written musicianship and analysis, with optional solfege and dictation tests, and submit a French-language presentation letter of up to two pages covering musical background, training, goals and career objectives; all evaluation materials and the applicant's chosen instrument and preferred instructor must be submitted within ten business days of applying. A non-refundable fee of at least $53.50 CAD covers the auditions, interviews and tests. The 90-credit programme has limited capacity and begins each August.
