Overview
This Co-operative Education stream of the Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering, offered by the Faculty of Engineering, covers the production, processing, and manufacturing of raw materials and finished products, with emphasis on the relationships between structure, properties, processing, and performance of materials. The University of Alberta is described as the only university in western Canada to offer a Materials Engineering program. Students complete a common first-year Engineering curriculum before choosing this specialization; admission is not available directly from high school. Under the Co-op option, students complete five paid, supervised work terms of four months each in addition to the usual eight academic terms of full-time study, extending total completion time to five years. Graduates work in industries including energy, biology, medicine, consumer products, and communications, in roles such as materials engineer, corrosion engineer, quality control engineer, and research and development engineer.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This program does not accept direct entry from high school. Applicants first complete a common Foundational/Qualifying Year shared by all Engineering students, then choose a specialized program and stream, including this Co-operative Education option, at the end of that year. Transfer students with post-secondary coursework taken outside the Faculty of Engineering are considered for admission based on GPA and relevant transfer credit.
