Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Co-operative program at the University of Alberta prepares students to design and develop electrical, electronic, and electromagnetic systems, from everyday devices to advanced robotics and instrumentation, telecommunications, and data-storage applications. Students gain hands-on experience with systems that transmit, distribute, store, control, and use electromagnetic energy or electrically coded information, and may add a Nanoengineering Option within the degree. Admission is not available directly from high school; students enter through the Faculty of Engineering's common Foundational/Qualifying Year and choose Electrical Engineering after completing first year, or transfer in based on prior coursework and GPA. Through the Co-op stream, students complete five paid, supervised four-month work terms in addition to the usual eight academic terms, extending the program to five years and combining coursework with industry experience. The degree is offered by the Faculty of Engineering. Graduates pursue careers such as electrical, electromagnetic, hardware, and telecommunications engineering.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is not available directly from high school. Students enter through the Faculty of Engineering's common Foundational/Qualifying Year and choose their specific specialization and stream (traditional or co-operative) after completing first year. Students with transferable post-secondary coursework taken outside the Faculty of Engineering are considered for admission based on GPA and relevant transfer credit. All applicants must also meet the University of Alberta's English Language Proficiency requirement.
