Program details

Overview

This Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering focuses on computer systems in which hardware and software components are closely coupled, preparing students for work spanning areas such as artificial intelligence, software engineering, and cybersecurity. Students choose between a Software Option, delivered in a cooperative-education format, and a Nanoscale System Design Option, allowing them to tailor their studies toward either systems software or hardware-level design. The cooperative education stream builds in work placement terms, and the page notes strong placement opportunities linked to Alberta's energy and resources industries. Instruction is in-person, in English, on the University of Alberta's Edmonton campus. There is no direct entry from high school: students first complete a common foundational engineering year before choosing this specialization. The program suits students interested in designing integrated computer systems and embedded technologies, with career paths noted including robotics engineering, firmware development, cybersecurity, and systems engineering.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Non-direct entry: Computer Engineering does not admit directly from high school. High school applicants first enter the Faculty of Engineering's foundational/qualifying first year (common curriculum for all engineering disciplines) and select the Computer Engineering specialization after completing it. Required Alberta high school courses for the qualifying year: English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30. No numeric minimum or competitive average is published on either page; admission to the qualifying year is competitive and the Faculty sets a minimum average annually. Transfer applicants with post-secondary coursework outside Engineering are assessed on GPA and transfer credit under separate Transfer Student Admission Requirements. English language proficiency is required. Application deadline is March 1.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
