Program details
Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Nanoengineering Option is a specialization within the University of Alberta's Electrical Engineering degree, focused on how electronics, electromagnetics, and photonics behave at the nanoscale. Students learn the fabrication processes used to build nanoscale structures, materials under one micrometre in size, and use computer-aided design tools to analyze phenomena at high levels of miniaturization, with applications ranging from computing speed to water-quality monitoring in remote communities. Coursework draws on the university's Micromachining and Nanofabrication Facility and its undergraduate nanotechnology lab. Admission is not available directly from high school; students enter through the Faculty of Engineering's common Foundational/Qualifying Year and choose Electrical Engineering with the Nanoengineering Option after completing first year, or transfer in based on prior coursework and GPA. The Option is completed as part of the standard, non-co-operative Electrical Engineering degree. Graduates pursue careers such as nanofabrication, computer, and electrical engineering roles.
