Program details

Overview

This Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering prepares students to design and develop electrical, electronic, and electromagnetic systems, with applications ranging from consumer devices to robotics, telecommunications, and data storage. After completing a common foundational first year, students choose between traditional and cooperative education streams, with the cooperative stream building in work placements; the page notes strong placement opportunities tied to Alberta's energy and resources sectors. A Nanoengineering Option is also available within the program. Instruction is delivered on-campus in English, with access to labs described as state-of-the-art and an emphasis on hands-on experience. The program is based at the University of Alberta's main Edmonton campus. There is no direct entry from high school; students complete the foundational engineering year before specializing. It suits students aiming toward careers such as avionics engineer, communications engineer, robotics engineer, or telecommunications specialist.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Non-direct entry: Electrical Engineering does not admit directly from high school. High school applicants first enter the Faculty of Engineering's foundational/qualifying first year (common curriculum for all engineering disciplines) and select the Electrical Engineering specialization after completing it. Required Alberta high school courses for the qualifying year: English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30. No numeric minimum or competitive average is published on either page; admission to the qualifying year is competitive and the Faculty sets a minimum average annually. Transfer applicants with post-secondary coursework outside Engineering are assessed on GPA and transfer credit. English language proficiency is required. Application deadline is March 1.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
