Overview
This Biomedical Option of the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, offered by the Faculty of Engineering, builds on the traditional Mechanical Engineering curriculum with a human-centric focus, applying engineering principles to problems in medicine and clinical sciences. Students complete a common first-year Engineering curriculum before choosing this option; admission is not available directly from high school. The Biomedical Option must be taken as a Co-operative Education program: students complete five paid, supervised work terms of four months each in addition to the usual eight academic terms of full-time study, extending total completion time to five years. Graduates are prepared for work in research laboratories, manufacturing facilities, offices, clinics, and hospitals, or for graduate-level study, in the health care industry and related fields.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This program does not accept direct entry from high school. Applicants first complete a common Foundational/Qualifying Year shared by all Engineering students, then choose a specialized program and stream, including this Biomedical Co-operative Education option, at the end of that year. Transfer students with post-secondary coursework taken outside the Faculty of Engineering are considered for admission based on GPA and relevant transfer credit.
