This dual-degree program combines the Biomedical Mechanical Engineering curriculum with a Bachelor of Science in Computing Technology, totalling 162 units. The Biomedical Mechanical Engineering component graduates engineers proficient in the biomedical applications of mechanical engineering, covering the design of medical devices such as artificial hearts, implants and prostheses, along with bio-compatible material development, medical robotics, biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering. Its structure parallels the regular Mechanical Engineering program, replacing eight courses with biomedically-oriented content while retaining core mechanical engineering foundations. Added to this is the Computing Technology component, giving graduates a second credential in computing alongside their engineering degree. The program is offered by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa in English and French, with co-operative education options available.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U), Advanced Functions 4U (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors 4U (MCV4U), Chemistry 4U (SCH4U), and Physics 4U (SPH4U); Biomedical Mechanical Engineering additionally requires Biology 4U (SBI4U). The published minimum admission average is 80%, with a minimum combined average of 70% required across the science and mathematics prerequisite courses specifically. This line applies uniformly across Biomedical Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering and their combined-degree variants with BSc Computing Technology, as well as the civil-engineering structural/geotechnical and environmental/water-resources options, since the Faculty of Engineering publishes one admission line per base discipline regardless of the option chosen within it. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission in a competitive cycle.
