Overview
This Bachelor of Arts in Criminology studies crime as a social phenomenon with Sociology as its primary disciplinary concentration, drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from anthropology, business, economics, psychology, political science, and philosophy. Students initially enroll in a standard Course-Based Stream and, after admission to the program, may apply to a separate, competitive Field Placement Stream. The program is based at the University of Alberta. Admission Requirements: Direct entry from high school. Admission to the Faculty of Arts is competitive: applicants present 5 Grade 12 subjects, including English Language Arts 30-1 and four more from an approved list (one 30-level Fine Arts course, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Aboriginal Studies 30, Social Studies 30-1, Mathematics 30-1/30-2/31, Physics 30, Science 30, Computer Science Advanced CTS, or a 30-level language other than English); only one Fine Arts subject may count. Criminology is one of the Faculty's most competitive majors: its three-year admission-average trend is high 80s to low 90s, well above the general Arts range (low-to-mid 70s). Meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee admission. No portfolio or audition is required.
