Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta covers solid mechanics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and design, combining theoretical study with practical, hands-on design work. As with the university's other engineering degrees, entry is not direct from high school: students complete a foundational, qualifying first year before choosing this specialization, and can pursue either a traditional or a cooperative education stream within mechanical engineering. A Biomedical option is available within the program, offered only through the cooperative stream. The program page describes the field as broad-based, preparing graduates for immediate employment across a wide range of industries from transportation to medicine, supported by strong industry connections and access to the university's engineering labs and teaching spaces. It suits students interested in the design and analysis of mechanical systems who want either a general mechanical engineering education or, through the co-op Biomedical option, a health-technology-oriented focus. Career paths described on the program page include aerospace engineer, automotive engineer, HVAC engineer, manufacturing engineer, robotics engineer, and research and development engineer.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This program does not admit directly from high school. Applicants must first complete the Bachelor of Science in Engineering - Qualifying Year, a common first-year curriculum for all engineering students; specialization into Mechanical Engineering begins in second year. For the Qualifying Year, Alberta applicants must present English Language Arts 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30. The Faculty of Engineering sets no fixed minimum admission average; the competitive average shifts each cycle with the applicant pool and program capacity. English language proficiency is required of all applicants regardless of citizenship.
Application Details
Start Date:Fall
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
