Overview
The Master of Arts in Material Culture is offered by the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Alberta and can be completed through a course-based or thesis-based route. Admission Requirements: Applicants require a four-year bachelor's degree with a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 on the 4-point scale (calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework, or the equivalent of the last two years of full-time study), or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution; applicants from a three-year program in a related field, or a four-year program in a different field, may be admitted as a qualifying student. Where applicable, international applicants must meet the university's English language proficiency requirement: a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 92 for tests taken before January 21, 2026, or a score of 4.5 on the new scale for tests taken on or after that date, a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5, or a minimum Cambridge score of 176 with at least 169 on each subscore. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a Statement of Goals and Objectives, and three letters of reference, and must have a faculty member agree to supervise their program before admission is approved.
