Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Adapted Physical Activity is a course-based program offered by the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta, delivered online. Adapted Physical Activity is one of several areas of graduate study offered by the Faculty, which also leads to the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Coaching, and Doctor of Philosophy across areas including Coaching Studies and Sport Psychology, Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine, Neuroscience and Movement, Physiology, Recreation, Sport and Tourism, and Sociocultural studies. Admission requires a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, or another related field, with a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on most 4.0 grading systems, or a B average on most letter grading systems, based on the most recent two years of full-time study or its equivalent. Applicants must also meet the minimum English Language Proficiency requirements set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies where applicable.

Admission Requirements: Minimum admission requirement for the master's thesis-based and course-based programs is a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, or another related field, with a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on most 4.0 grading systems, or a B average on most letter grading systems, based on the most recent two years of full-time study or its equivalent. For the doctoral program, the minimum requirement is a master's degree, or its academic equivalent, with thesis, in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, or another related field, at the same GPA standard. Where applicable, candidates must also meet the minimum English Language Proficiency requirements set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (6.0 minimum per band); TOEFL iBT 90 overall (21 minimum per section, tests before January 21, 2026) or 4.5 overall (4.5 minimum per section, tests thereafter); CAEL 70 overall (60 minimum per subtest); PTE Academic 61 overall (60 minimum per skill); or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 overall (169 minimum per subscore).
