Program details
Overview
This Honours program in Physics gives students a broad grounding in modern physics, covering mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism through to specialized areas such as laser spectroscopy, optics and electronics. As with all Bachelor of Science with Honors programs at the University of Alberta, the degree centres on in-depth training in a single subject and includes an embedded research thesis project completed under the direction of a department member; students in the Honours stream are held to higher academic standards than those in the BSc Major stream. Physics is also offered as a BSc Major for students who do not pursue the Honours route. Students may add a minor from the Faculty of Arts, Native Studies, Business or Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, though a double major is not available in the Honours program and some combinations are not possible. The program is delivered by the Faculty of Science, which comprises 12 teaching departments across 29 areas of study. Graduates typically pursue roles such as physicist, research scientist, meteorologist or medical physicist.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:80.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct-entry applicants from Alberta high school (or equivalent) require Physics 30 (Mathematics 31 strongly recommended) among their five Grade 12 admission courses; provincial course equivalents apply outside Alberta and the programs-and-requirements search tool on the admissions website lists them by province. The minimum average to apply to a BSc Honors program in the Faculty of Science is 80%, calculated from the five required Grade 12 courses for high-school applicants (or from the most recent 24 transferable post-secondary units for transfer applicants); meeting this minimum does not guarantee admission, as all applicants must also meet the competitive average for the program, which varies by year and applicant pool. All applicants must meet the university's English Language Proficiency requirements.
