Program details
Overview
This Bachelor of Arts program in Linguistics and Language is the scientific study of language as a universal human phenomenon, giving students the opportunity to analyze the structure of various languages and apply that knowledge across a range of sub-fields and languages. First-year courses include English Syntax, Historical Linguistics I, Phonetics I, Phonology I, and Introduction to Linguistics, and students develop creative thinking, research and analytical skills, written and verbal communication skills, and competence in a second language other than English. Program options include a co-operative work placement that alternates paid full-time work terms with academic study and study abroad opportunities. Graduates pursue careers in the civil service, the non-profit sector, and business, and the degree can also serve as a foundation for graduate study or further professional programs in law, medicine, veterinary medicine, or education.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Alberta high school applicants require English Language Arts 30-1 plus four further approved courses, one of which may be an approved option; equivalent Alberta curriculum courses, IB, AP or SAT II subject test results are accepted in place of the option courses. Only one of Art 30/31, Dance 35, Drama 30 or Music 30/31 may be counted toward the admission average. The estimated competitive admission average for direct-entry high school applicants is in the high 70s (percentage scale), calculated from the required and approved option courses; early admission uses four approved courses from grade 11, standard admission uses five from grades 11-12. All applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must separately meet the university's English language proficiency requirement. Applicants presenting 12 or more units of post-secondary coursework are assessed as transfer applicants under a separate GPA-based process rather than this high-school average.
