Overview
The thesis-based Master of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Calgary trains researchers in core areas of theoretical linguistics, including syntax, semantics, phonology, phonetics, and morphology, as well as language acquisition, historical linguistics, and psycholinguistics. Students take six courses, including an introductory course, a thesis research course, Advanced Syntactical Analysis, and Advanced Phonological Analysis, plus two electives, and are expected to complete a thesis based on original research within two years. Full-time completion is expected in two years, with a maximum of four years; part-time study is available. Students are guaranteed funding of $20,000 per year for two years. The program maintains a low student-to-faculty ratio, and graduates regularly place in top doctoral programs in linguistics.

Admission Requirements: Applicants need significant undergraduate training in linguistics, normally including at least one course in syntax and one in phonology, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 point system over the last two years of full-time study. Proficiency in a language other than English is required. Required materials include three reference letters, a work sample such as an honours thesis or course paper, and a statement of purpose. English language proficiency requirements for non-native speakers are set out in the Academic Calendar. Applications for September 1 admission are due January 30.
