The Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine is a 93-unit, course-based graduate program and the first of its kind in Alberta. Graduates become eligible for the national PA certification exam and registration with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta, preparing them to work under the supervision of licensed medical practitioners in hospitals, health-care clinics, and physician offices. The two-year, in-person program comprises 26 courses. Year one repeats three core courses, PA Fundamentals, Foundations of Practice, and Clinical Skills, across the fall, winter, and spring/summer terms, while year two centres on an immersive clinical experience with core clinical rotations, two elective rotations, and longitudinal coursework. The curriculum incorporates social determinants of health and equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility issues throughout.
