Program details
Overview
The Creative Writing major is a four-year Bachelor of Arts program in the College of Arts at the University of Guelph. Students write across fiction, poetry, scripts, and personal essays while studying the craft techniques behind character development, narrative structure, and voice. Coursework connects creative practice to broader questions of identity and values, with options to explore social justice and environmental themes through writing. The program includes opportunities to interact with published authors through visiting-writer events and to take part in community-engaged initiatives such as the Walls to Bridges program, which brings together university students and incarcerated learners in shared coursework. Creative Writing can be combined with a minor or a second major. Graduates typically pursue further study or careers in publishing, journalism, education, and other fields that draw on writing and communication skills.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Creative Writing Bachelor of Arts (BA) follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from their top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program. Cut-off averages vary by year based on application volume and space available, and Guelph publishes program-specific course and average guidance through its admission requirements search tool.
