The Accounting major is offered within the Bachelor of Commerce program at Guelph's Lang School of Business, preparing students for careers as Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA). Coursework builds foundational accounting and business knowledge, covering financial and managerial accounting, auditing, and taxation alongside core business subjects. Students can pair the major with a secondary area of focus such as leadership, data analytics, business sustainability, marketing, international business, or human resources management, broadening the degree beyond technical accounting skills. An optional co-operative education stream is available, adding up to 16 months of work-integrated learning across multiple work terms before graduation. The program combines classroom instruction with case-based and applied learning designed to build the analytical and communication skills accounting professionals use in public practice, industry, and government. Graduates are positioned to pursue the CPA certification pathway or enter related finance and business roles. The major sits within Guelph's broader Bachelor of Commerce offerings, which also include majors in food and agricultural business and government, economics and management.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Accounting and Real Estate are entered through the Bachelor of Commerce, in the admission group that also includes Food and Agricultural Business, Management, Marketing Management, Management Economics and Finance, Sport and Event Management and Undeclared Commerce. Applicants need English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), one further 4U Mathematics course, and three additional 4U or 4M courses, six 4U/M courses in total. The admission average is calculated from these six courses under the current Ontario Secondary School Curriculum; where two completed courses are judged equivalent, only one counts, and the non-academic component of 4U/M co-op courses is excluded from the calculation.
