Overview

This Bachelor of Arts in Economics, offered through the Faculty of Arts, examines wages and employment, economic growth, productivity, wealth and poverty, government budgets and taxation, resource exploitation, business practices, inflation, recession, and regional economic differences, through courses such as Canadian economic issues and policy, economic analytics using computer-based methods, the economics of gender, monetary macroeconomics and policy, and the history of economic thought. The degree is offered at General (90 credit hours), Advanced, and Honours (120 credit hours) levels, the Honours program offering economics-and-econometrics or economics-and-society streams, alongside joint programs with the Faculty of Science in economics-mathematics and economics-statistics. A co-op option and an 18-credit-hour minor are available, and part-time study is permitted at all levels; delivery is on the Fort Garry campus. It suits students seeking to understand economic issues for roles in government, policy research, financial firms, international business, or cooperatives, or for further academic study.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Faculty of Arts admission (applies to all BA majors; no Economics-specific admission requirement). Direct Entry (Manitoba high school students, fewer than 24 post-secondary credit hours): minimum average of 70% over English 40S, Mathematics 40S, and two academic 40S courses, with no less than 60% in each course. Advanced Entry (24+ post-secondary credit hours): minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (C). BA General requires 90 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.00 in Economics courses; BA Advanced requires 120 credit hours (at least 48 in Economics, 18 in a minor, or a double major) with a minimum GPA of 2.00; BA Honours requires 120 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.00. Meeting these minimums does not guarantee admission.
