BA/BS in Labour Studies is a bachelor's degree in Social & Cultural Studies programme taught at University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. The programme runs for 3 years. Tuition for international students is CAD 689 per credit (CAD 164 per credit for local students).
The Labour Studies program at the University of Manitoba leads to a Bachelor of Arts, offered as a General degree (90 credit hours, minimum 2.0 GPA in the major) or an Advanced degree (120 credit hours, minimum 2.0 GPA in required Faculty courses), either of which can be completed part-time. A minor in Labour Studies and a 30-credit Diploma in Labour Relations and Workplace Studies are also available, and the Advanced program includes a co-op option through the Faculty of Arts. The curriculum examines the social, economic, and political dimensions of work, covering the history of the labour movement, the effects of globalization, workplace organization, occupational health and safety, and labour law, with a field studies placement course in the fourth year of the Advanced program. Completion of the Advanced major carries an agreement with Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Manitoba allowing exam waivers. It suits students preparing for roles such as union representatives, human resource managers, workplace advocates, teachers, or lawyers, as well as those continuing to graduate study.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission is first to the Faculty of Arts general B.A. program, not directly to a subject major. Direct Entry from high school requires Manitoba high school graduation with five full Grade 12 credits (S, G, or U) and a minimum 70% average over English 40S, Mathematics 40S, and two more academic 40S courses, with no less than 60% in each. Advanced Entry (transfer, 24+ credit hours) requires a minimum cumulative or adjusted GPA of 2.00 (or, under the Dean's Recommendation pathway, a 2.00 GPA on the best 24 transferable credit hours). Once admitted, a student may declare a Labour Studies Major (30 credit hours) or Minor (18 credit hours) once its prerequisite is satisfied; the Faculty's rule for entry into any Major or Minor is a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course(s) for Labour Studies.
