PhD in Applied Health Sciences

The Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Health Sciences is a multidisciplinary, research-based program at the University of Manitoba coordinated jointly by Kinesiology and Recreation Management and Rehabilitation Sciences. The program trains students to conduct independent research addressing applied health questions that draw on multiple disciplines rather than a single field. Students undertake advanced coursework, a comprehensive candidacy examination, and an original doctoral thesis under the supervision of a faculty advisor whose research interests align with their own. A monthly interdisciplinary seminar series brings together University of Manitoba faculty and outside speakers to expose students to a broad range of applied health research methods and topics. Applicants typically hold a research-based master's degree in a related discipline, though those with relevant research experience but no thesis-based master's are considered on a case-by-case basis. Before applying, prospective students must identify their research interests and secure agreement from an eligible faculty member willing to supervise them. Full-time students can expect to complete the degree in about four years.
