Overview
UNBC's History MA lets students specialize in the department's regional strengths -- Canada, Britain and its empire, and the Iberian world -- with particular depth in gender, legal, environmental, and Indigenous history. Thesis-track students complete five graduate courses and a 100-page thesis grounded in original research, while course-based students take six courses and produce a major research paper of comparable scope; some may instead pursue a project such as a documentary, museum exhibit, or digital history initiative. All students take a required methodology seminar and a course on historical methods and approaches before choosing electives with their supervisor from topics spanning gender, Indigenous, environmental, and cultural history. Admission depends on the availability of a faculty supervisor whose research matches the applicant's interests.

Admission Requirements: Admission follows UNBC's General Admission standard from the Graduate Academic Calendar. Applicants must supply a sample of written work such as a thesis chapter or research paper, and are accepted subject to the availability of an appropriate faculty supervisor, who is assigned on acceptance. The History MA accepts students for the September Semester. International applicants must also meet UNBC's graduate English-language proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no component under 20), PTE Academic 65 (no component under 60), or CAEL 70 (no subtest under 60). No numeric GPA minimum beyond UNBC's general 3.00 (B) standard, and no interview requirement, is published for this program.
