Overview
UNBC's Mathematics MSc offers a choice between a thesis option for students aiming at further research or academic study, and a project option aimed at professionals such as teachers or working mathematicians upgrading their skills. Both routes require two semesters of the Graduate Seminar course; the thesis stream adds a minimum of 12 elective credit hours and a 12-credit-hour thesis defended publicly, while the project stream calls for 18 elective credit hours and a 6-credit-hour project report. Electives are drawn from mathematics and statistics offerings at or above the 600 level, and the project stream is limited to specializations where the department has sufficient teaching capacity. Admission depends on finding a faculty supervisor and normally requires two of three reference letters to speak to the applicant's research potential.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: UNBC's Mathematics MSc calendar page defers explicitly to the General Admission section of the Graduate Academic Calendar for its base requirements: for domestic applicants a minimum overall average of 3.00 (B) in third- and fourth-year coursework, and for applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no section under 20), PTE Academic 65 (no skill under 60), or CAEL 70 (no subtest under 60). Beyond that, acceptance into the MSc is contingent on the applicant finding a UNBC faculty member willing to serve as their supervisor, and normally requires three letters of recommendation, at least two of them able to speak to the applicant's academic and research potential. No specific intake term or additional English requirement is stated on the program page itself.
