Overview
UNBC's Physics MSc offers a thesis option for students aiming at research careers or further academic study and a project option suited to those upgrading professional skills without a traditional research thesis. Both streams require the Graduate Seminar course; the thesis route adds a minimum of 12 elective credit hours and a 12-credit-hour thesis defended publicly, while the project route calls for 18 elective credit hours and a 6-credit-hour project accompanied by a public lecture on the completed work. Students who finished UNBC's Accelerated Postgraduate Stream during their BSc in Physics can apply up to 9 credit hours of prior coursework toward a reduced Accelerated Thesis Option. Admission is contingent on securing a faculty supervisor, and applicants normally need at least two of three reference letters addressing their research potential.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: UNBC's Physics MSc calendar page defers explicitly to the General Admission section of the Graduate Academic Calendar for its base requirements: for domestic applicants a minimum overall average of 3.00 (B) in third- and fourth-year coursework, and for applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no section under 20), PTE Academic 65 (no skill under 60), or CAEL 70 (no subtest under 60). Beyond that, acceptance into the MSc is contingent on the applicant finding a UNBC faculty member willing to serve as their supervisor, and normally at least two of the three letters of recommendation must be from individuals able to speak to the applicant's academic and research potential. No specific intake term or additional English requirement is stated on the program page itself.
