The Master of Laws (LLM) is offered by the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, reflecting Canada's bilingual and trijuridical legal system of civil law, common law and Indigenous law, and the university's location in Canada's capital. Students may pursue the general LLM in any subject, with particular strength in international law and human rights law, or choose one of eight formal concentrations. The program offers three completion routes: a thesis option, a research paper option, and a coursework option, each with different length requirements and course loads. Courses are offered in English or French, and occasionally in both languages. Full-time students in the thesis or research paper option are expected to complete the degree within two years; the coursework option runs over four full-time consecutive terms (16 months). Part-time study is available on longer timelines for each option. The program leads to a Master of Laws credential.
