Overview

The Law & Society Certificate introduces different approaches to law and builds critical skills for socio-legal study and research, examining how law operates in everyday life. It is a General Certificate completed alongside a York bachelor's degree in another discipline, rather than a stand-alone credential. Students complete 24 credits drawn from an approved list of Law & Society courses, including one 6.0-credit course and at least 18 further credits, with a minimum of 6 credits at the 4000 level, and must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 5.0 (C+) or higher across these 24 credits. The certificate is offered by the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and admits students in the Fall term. On completion it appears on the transcript alongside the student's primary degree, documenting focused study of legal institutions and their social context drawn from multiple disciplinary perspectives.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This certificate is open to current York students in a degree program other than Law & Society who do not already hold a university degree in a law and society-related discipline. Students must complete 24 credits from a list of approved Law & Society courses, with a cumulative grade point average in these 24 credits of 5.0 (C+) or higher.
