Overview
The Master of Water Security, offered through the University of Saskatchewan's School of Environment and Sustainability in partnership with the Global Institute for Water Security, is a project-based graduate program that does not require a thesis. It comprises 36 credit units and is designed to be completed over 24 months. Instruction is delivered in a hybrid format combining in-person and online components, based at the Saskatoon campus, which allows some flexibility for students who are not able to relocate full-time. The program addresses contemporary water-related challenges such as drought, flooding, pollution and the effects of climate change, aiming to build practical skills for managing water resources and supporting sustainable development, informed by the university's water research community. Applicants are not required to secure a faculty supervisor before applying, which distinguishes it from the university's thesis-based graduate programs and makes entry more straightforward for working professionals. The program suits people already working in water-related fields, or aiming to move into them, who want a practically oriented graduate credential rather than a traditional research degree, and who are looking to take on leadership roles addressing water management issues.
