Overview

The Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan's College of Dentistry, established in 1965, is a four-year, full-time professional degree accredited by the Canadian Dental Association and recognized by the American Dental Association. The program combines classroom instruction with progressively advanced clinical training in Saskatoon: the first year covers foundational sciences such as oral anatomy, dental materials, and operative dentistry; the second and third years introduce clinical disciplines including periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery alongside continued coursework; and the fourth year emphasizes advanced clinical care and practice management. Students begin with simulated clinical practice in a dedicated simulation facility before treating patients in the college's student dental clinic, which handles a high volume of patient visits each year. The college admits a small annual cohort supported by a substantial full-time and part-time faculty complement. Admission requires prior undergraduate coursework in specified pre-dentistry subjects, a minimum cumulative average, the Dental Aptitude Test, and an interview. It suits students committed to a clinical dentistry career, with further options in dental research, public health dentistry, or academic dental education after graduation.
