Overview

UFV's two-year diploma in Graphic and Digital Design helps you develop a solid foundation in communication design, brand identity, interactive design, and dynamic media to enable you to become a skilled graphic designer, visual communicator, and creative strategist. To provide you with valuable experience and ensure you develop a strong portfolio for employment, course work emphasizes real-world projects, contexts, and issues. You get to design visual communications solutions by applying design thinking processes using industry-standard digital tools in UFV's networked studios and labs. Rooted in design process, resourcefulness, and conceptual development, the diploma also develops skills in critical thinking, typography, image making, content creation, and industry standard Adobe software.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Competitive, portfolio-assessed entry. ACADEMIC: B.C. secondary school graduation or an equivalent, or being 19 or older before the first day of classes; the prerequisites for CMNS 125 or ENGL 105; English at UFV's Degree/diploma level, which international applicants and anyone whose first language is not English normally meet with IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 88 (no section under 20), PTE Academic 61 with 60 in writing, Duolingo 110, or English Studies 12 / English First Peoples 12 at C+. and, for applicants with university-level credit, a GPA of 2.00 across everything attempted. PORTFOLIO: a portfolio of creative work with accompanying documentation, following the guidelines on the Graphic and Digital Design website. It is not due at the time of application - UFV sends the requirements and submission dates once the Office of the Registrar has processed your file, and it is submitted online by the posted deadline. An interview may follow depending on what the visual and written submission shows; its purpose is to gauge readiness for the demands of the programme and the industry. SELECTION: portfolios are judged on creative ability, exploration and experimentation, and professionalism, alongside the written reflections and submitted documents, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. WAITLIST AND REGISTRATION: qualified applicants for a full programme go on a temporary waitlist, which is void after 1 September for Fall and after 1 January for Winter; applicants who do not register by the end of June for Fall, or November for Winter, are replaced from the waitlist. Applicants under 19 hold a Fall place conditional on proof of secondary graduation. While waiting, you can register as a Qualifying Studies student without a separate application.

Application Details

Start Date: Two entry points a year - Fall (September to December) and Winter (January to April). UFV's programme list shows no Summer intake for this one.
Application Deadline: UFV publishes no closing date of its own for this programme - the Calendar entry points applicants at the institution-wide schedule instead of naming a deadline, so what follows is that schedule. DOMESTIC APPLICANTS: applications open 1 October for the Fall (September) intake and 1 May for the Winter (January) intake. Apply as soon after the opening date as you can: UFV admits many programmes in application-date order, and it records that date only once the application, the fee and every document listed in the programme's Calendar entry have arrived. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final grades with proof of graduation by 3 August. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS: this programme accepts international students. UFV International runs its own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter, 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and confirms acceptances in the order applications arrive, so a programme can close early once it fills. Allow up to six weeks for a decision, and pay the tuition that confirms an offer by 1 May for Fall, 1 October for Winter or 15 February for Summer.
