Overview
This program delivers the in-school technical training levels of the heavy mechanical apprenticeship for people already employed and registered as apprentices with Skilled Trades BC. The trade offers four streams of qualification; the two main streams progress through four levels of in-school training of decreasing length: level one at ten weeks, level two at eight weeks, level three at six weeks, and level four at four to five weeks, with level four offering specialization as a Truck and Transport Mechanic or Heavy Duty Equipment Technician. UFV delivers all four levels, with intakes scheduled according to demand. Two alternative streams, Transport Trailer Trade and Diesel Engine Trade, run as two-year apprenticeships, with the Transport Trailer stream leading to Red Seal certification and the Diesel Engine stream to a certificate of qualification. Between in-school blocks, apprentices complete employer-sponsored on-the-job training hours. The program suits registered, employer-sponsored apprentices progressing toward trade certification; those without current employment are directed to UFV's Heavy Mechanical foundation program to gain entry-level skills first.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UFV's Heavy Mechanical apprenticeship program page sets out no academic prerequisites, minimum grades, GPA, or English/French language test score; admission runs through trade employment rather than an academic file. Applicants must already be working as a Heavy Mechanical Technician under a sponsoring employer, or must first complete UFV's entry-level Heavy Mechanical program to gain the skills needed to secure that employment. Once a training stream is confirmed with an employer, the apprentice registers with Skilled Trades BC, who adjusts their trade profile accordingly. To apply, candidates submit UFV's online apprenticeship application and then supply their apprenticeship level, Skilled Trades BC number, and sponsor/employer details by email before being scheduled into the next available in-school training block. Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
