Program details

Overview

Drama is offered as a Major, Minor, or Specialist within the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts. The program combines academic study of dramatic literature, theatre history, and performance theory with practical studio training in acting, directing, design, playwriting, and production. All students complete two foundation courses, DRM101Y1 and DRM220Y1, then choose from courses grouped into Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies (Group A) and Studio (Group B), with the Major requiring 8.0 credits (2.0 at the 300+ level, including 0.5 at the 400-level) and the Specialist requiring 12.0 credits (4.0 at the 300+ level, including 1.0 at the 400-level). Students can take a maximum of 3.0 Group B credits per year, and some Studio courses require an audition, a personal interview, or a portfolio submission. Because Drama is designed to combine with programs in other Humanities, Social Sciences, or Sciences subjects, graduates typically pair it with fields such as English, Cinema Studies, Political Science, Psychology, or Human Biology.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six subjects at the 4U/M level, including English (ENG4U/EAE4U); the co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission. Drama is open enrolment for the Major and Specialist: a student who has completed 4.0 credits may enrol in the Major (8.0 credits) or Specialist (12.0 credits). Some Studio (Group B) courses require an audition, a personal interview, or a portfolio submission, and minimum grades apply to some prerequisite courses to advance through Studio courses.
