Overview

Exceptionality in Human Learning is an Honours Bachelor of Science specialist program in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga. The program is interdisciplinary, offering varying levels of concentration in typical and atypical human development, abnormal behaviour, and disability issues. The specialist option includes a Practicum in Exceptionality intended to prepare students for graduate study. Coursework covers topics such as language, mind, and brain; educational psychology and the science of learning; and a survey of contemporary theory on disability and giftedness across the lifespan. The program combines psychological, educational, and biological perspectives on learning and development. Graduates commonly pursue careers such as principal, learning specialist, social worker, psychologist, and biologist. The program is offered on the Mississauga campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science degree.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six subjects at the 4U/M level, including English (ENG4U or EAE4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and Biology (SBI4U). The co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission purposes. At the University of Toronto Mississauga the specialist option has a current competitive admission average in the mid-to-high 70s.
