Program details

Overview

This is the Master of Science program in Computer Science offered through the University of Toronto's School of Graduate Studies and Department of Computer Science. It combines coursework with faculty-supervised research, and applicants are matched with a supervisor by the graduate unit before admission rather than arranging supervision independently. The department's research spans programming languages and methodology, software engineering, operating systems, compilers, distributed computation, networks, numerical analysis and scientific computing, algorithm design and computational complexity, cryptography, artificial intelligence and neural networks, computational linguistics, computer vision, robotics, database systems, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction, among other areas. Admission to the MSc requires a B+ average in the final year of the undergraduate degree, and no standardized admission tests are required or recommended. Students who meet a higher academic standard, an A-minus average in relevant coursework, may be considered for direct entry from the bachelor's degree into the PhD program rather than completing the MSc first. The program suits students seeking graduate-level training in computing that spans theoretical foundations and applied, systems-oriented, or human-centred research areas under individual faculty supervision.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the MSc in Computer Science requires a completed bachelor's degree, with applicants normally presenting at least a B+ average in their final year of study; direct entry to the PhD from a bachelor's degree requires a minimum A-minus average in courses in the discipline. The department's own admission page lists standardized English-proficiency tests as not applicable, so none is required or recommended. Before admission, an applicant must have a faculty supervisor identified, assigned by the graduate unit rather than secured independently. The application deadline for Fall entry is December 1, applying equally to domestic and international applicants.
