Italian at the University of Toronto St. George campus, within the Department of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, is offered as an Italian Studies Specialist, Major, or Minor, and as a separate Italian Language Minor. The program combines structured Italian-language study with coursework across four areas of concentration: literature, cinema and visual studies, linguistics, and cultural, postcolonial and transnational studies, allowing students to pursue focused academic interests while maintaining breadth across the discipline. Language placement is determined by the department rather than by student self-placement, based on a background questionnaire and, where needed, an assessment. The Major requires 3.0 credits of core Italian-language courses, 0.5 credit from ITA202H1, 1.0 additional credit from designated intermediate courses, and 2.5 credits spread across three of the four concentration areas. All programs are open enrolment to students who have completed 4.0 credits, with no minimum grade specified. Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six Grade 12 U/M-level courses including English.
