Overview
In the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, you’ll explore the most fundamental questions concerning the world and our place in it. You'll study the nature of truth, justice, knowledge, meaning and beauty. In this program, you'll explore the nature of reasoning and practice applying critical-thinking skills in everyday life.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Philosophy (BA) is a Faculty of Humanities program admitting directly from Grade 12. For British Columbia and Yukon applicants the Faculty requires at Grade 11 approved English 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-calculus 11, an approved science 11 and an approved social studies 11/12, then at Grade 12 English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 at a minimum of 73% plus three further approved academic Grade 12 courses; other provinces and international curricula publish their own equivalent lists on the program page. UVic estimates a recommended admission average of at least 80% on the required Grade 12 courses, though meeting the minimum never guarantees an offer given competition for places. Applicants whose primary language of instruction was not English must meet UVic's undergraduate English-language-proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no component below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 88 (no section below 20), PTE Academic 65 (no skill below 60), Duolingo 120 (no subscore below 110) or CAEL 70 (no section below 60). Transfer applicants from a BC college normally need a C average (2.00 on UVic's 9-point scale) across their most recent coursework, rising to A- (7.00) after one full year of a diploma or B (5.00) on a completed diploma.
Application Details
Start Date:September (Winter Session) entry is the main intake and the only one open to applicants still in high school. UVic also lists January and Summer starts for this program, open to applicants who have already left high school and to post-secondary transfer applicants.
Application Deadline:UVic institution-wide dates, identical for Canadian and international applicants (UVic publishes no separate international deadline). September entry: 31 January. January entry: 30 September. Summer entry: 31 March. The January and Summer intakes are for high-school graduates and transfer applicants, not for students still in high school. High-school applicants who submit grades by early December can be considered for early admission. UVic states these are annual fixed dates and warns that a program can stop accepting applications at any time without notice, while some programs keep accepting them past the published date.
